Working with other organisations, the police aim to protect vulnerable people from being exploited by extremists through a Home Office programme called PREVENT

The core mission of Prevent is stopping people from developing extremist views and as described on the police websites, ultimately becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The early intervention support provided by Prevent addresses the personal, ideological, and social factors which make people more susceptible to radicalisation.

The police aim to work in partnership with front-line professionals such as teachers to help educate children so that they develop values that are productive and align to the values of our social structures.

They also work in this regard with healthcare practitioners, social workers, other police departments, charities, the civil society, psychologists, community and faith leaders to the same ends.

HomeOffice

The prevent agenda aims to support these professions directly through the delivery of the prevent agenda by local authority teams, local policing teams, community organisations and charities that have the best expertise in their area.

This work does not target any one community and deals with all forms of terrorism, including Islamist, extreme right-wing and a range of emerging threats as described on the home office website.

The work is not limited to an age group, is not a tool for spying or surveillance, and the Prevent duty does not place any restrictions on free speech. It is part of the wider safeguarding obligations we have towards protecting people from harm and remains a requirement as set out in the equality duty.

This duty engages us to ensure we

  • eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by or under the Equality Act 2010;
  • advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it;
  • foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.

As a school we have delivered assembly inputs to students on this and other topics working directly with local police officers and will continue over the course of the 2023/24 academic year.

As a staff we aim to remain vigilant for the complex signs of prevent related concerns in our young people and act through our safeguarding processes.

We also encourage parents and carers to share concerns with Derbyshire Police via this link.  The earlier the concern is raised, the quicker we can get the right support involved.

At Queen Elizabeths Grammar School as part of our ongoing belief that “it could happen here” we work with our young people to ensure that they develop as balanced and understanding individuals that consider themselves and others as important parts of our community on school and the wider community within Ashbourne and the wider areas of Derbyshire and beyond.

The aim of the national Prevent agenda is to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism: The Department of Education state that ‘Schools can help to protect children from extremist and violent views in the same ways that they help to safeguard children from drugs, gang violence or alcohol. This can and should be done through the education around these elements.

At Queen Elizabeths Grammar School we conduct inputs in Assembly’s, tutor periods and our PSHE programme across all year groups. For further information access our PSHE section on the curriculum hub.

Parents and carers are encouraged to contact us should they have concerns either about the young people in their care or others that they know. Together we can work to support those developing view that could place them or others at risk of harm.
