Keeping a Journal + Daily Tasks + Weekly Society Reach-Out
Please have a go at the various things below – Mr Bawden would love it if you emailed your results to him! Best ideas when we return to school may win rubbish prizes, and the best each week will gain merits.
Okay, so we are going to continue to keep a journal until we all see each other again. Each morning we will keep adding new answers to the same set of prompts based on what happened the day before:
- Something you found that was beautiful
- Something beautiful in nature
- Something morally beautiful you heard/saw someone do
- A beautiful idea
Over time this will add up to quite an amazing journal. You might write it, type it, include pictures, record it. Be imaginative with how you do it. If you can send it in to Mr Bawden that would be great – every week he will be awarding merits for the best work. When we return to school there may be a small, fairly pointless prize for the best ones. His ideas to start you off are: a tulip has just started to come up in my garden + I can hear bird song when I wake up + the person in front of me in the queue at the supermarket gave up her paracetamol to an older person + I’m going to have a whole bowl of custard for lunch, beautiful!
In addition, on each day there will be other things to do during what was Tutor Time.

PSHE: In the PSHE lessons we are currently looking at how we view others and our relationship to them. Try to find a way of applying what you have been looking at in PSHE to the world around you.
Finally, here is this week’s exercise for improving our society. These are extra tasks, you do not have to do them but they are likely to be fun, help people, and make our society better [whether that is our society at home, locally or further afield]
Society 1:
Last week you looked at a news article. This week we are drawing to the end of a very different half term. Try to write a short paragraph, or draw a picture to summarise what has been happening – so you remember it for the future. Think about how you and others feel.

Pick up a book, magazine, online article and start reading – what do you like about it? Try to summarise your thoughts and then share them with someone else
Please make sure A Picture of Me is updated
Planning: Make a plan to call a friend when the sun is setting, and then watch it together even though you are not with each other.

Stress survival guide – If a smile was…
Have a look for things that might represent a smile. If a smile were a flower, which flower would it be? If it were a kitchen utensil? If it were a TV programme, or YouTuber? If it were a song?
Please make sure A Picture of Me is updated
PSHE: In the PSHE lessons we are currently looking at issues around how we treat others in our society. For this session today you could add to it by writing a paragraph or two on how people’s views of key workers has changed. Has it changed in the same way for ALL types of key workers.
Finally, here is this week’s exercise for improving our society. These are extra tasks, you do not have to do them but they are likely to be fun, help people, and make our society better [whether that is our society at home, locally or further afield]
Society 1:
Last week you designed a quiz. This week look for a news article and discuss it with either friends or family. It must be an article about something other than the pandemic. The aim is to make sure we do not forget other things are happening in our world. As an extension you might choose one positive and one negative story.
Week Five (w/c 04/05/2020)

Week Four (w/c 27/04/2020)
In addition, on each day there will be other things to do during what was Tutor Time. Here are the fourth week’s. This week is a bit different because we want you to focus on A Picture of Me – which you can access from your phone or other device and is on our Intranet. For some of you this might be the first time you have added anything to it, for others you might be updating, for everyone there are new bits to add:
Discussion task: ‘The things I have written in the ‘About Me’ section really reflect who I am’ Try to go through this section with someone else and ask them if anything surprises them, or whether they would have added anything.
Activity and Reading: Check through the ‘Other Things I Do Well’ section adding anything missing, and then aim to do or demonstrate or research something new to do with one of your answers.
Pick up a book, magazine, online article and start reading – what do you like about it? Try to summarise your thoughts and then share them with someone else
Planning: Check through the ‘Co-curricular’ section adding anything missing, and then plan a way someone might do one of those hobbies or activities from lock down.
Poster: Create a poster, or a PowerPoint slide [or similar] to show ‘Me’ using your Picture of Me
PSHE: Last week you researched a job. This time research how people who do that job might be working during the current lock-down. What has changed and why?
Finally, here is this week’s exercise for improving our society. These are extra tasks, you do not have to do them but they are likely to be fun, help people, and make our society better [whether that is our society at home, locally or further afield]
Society 1:
Write a ‘Picture of Me’ for a friend or relative to make them feel good about all the things you value in them, then decide whether to share it with them or not!
Week Three (w/c 20/04/2020)
Discussion task: ‘A painting of a place you love is better than a photograph’ Do you think this is true? Discuss your answers with someone else, and do not forget to ask them where the picture or painting would be of.
Activity and Reading: Choose any small household item, place it on the edge of some paper in the sun and then draw around the shadow it casts on the paper. In the shape it leaves write down all the possible uses for that item, draw some of them, label them and then email your finished piece of work in.
Pick up a book, magazine, online article and start reading – what do you like about it? Try to summarise your thoughts and then share them with someone else
Planning: Choose one subject you love in school. Plan an activity everyone could do for that subject from home. Email your idea to your teacher.
Stress survival guide Pt 1, the Spirit/Soul:
- Talk out loud to yourself, and say lots of positive things
- Practice saying ‘no’ when you should, and ‘yes’ when you should
- Turn off social media for an hour
- Accept that stress is normal, but try not to add to it
- Be aware of when you feel on edge and stop for a bit, breath, and then continue
Looking at this list can you think of anyone who would benefit from you sharing these techniques? Have you got any other ideas? How could you share them so that others feel supported? Next week we will look at the Body in our Stress survival guide.
Society 1:
Smile, yes that’s it… smile. Nothing else. Just smile – a big, wide, glorious smile. Use it to smile at anyone you can – people in your home, on video-chat, but smile. The kind of smile that makes your eyes crinkle. Try to notice how it affects others. Then smile again, but to yourself in the mirror. Think about whether you feel better too.
Week Two (w/c 30/03/2020)
Discussion task: ‘Being unselfish, kind, and considerate of other people’s feelings are more attractive qualities to have than being clever and good looking’ is this true? How could we help someone keep things in perspective?
Activity and Reading: Plan and do 3 things that will help other people feel like themselves. Then write down why and share it with someone else. Does it surprise them?
Pick up a book, magazine, online article and start reading – what do you like about it? Try to summarise your thoughts and then share them with someone else
Planning: Plan a day where you will use at least 5 household items to help you keep fit. For example you might find a book and walk around with it on your head to help you work on your posture [plus it might make everyone laugh!]
Stress survival guide Pt 1, the Body:
- Try to sleep for at least 7 hours
- Get up and move every 45 minutes, set an alarm to remind you
- Eat the right stuff, yes that includes your greens
- Take the time to notice each breath
- Tense and then relax the muscles in your arms and legs, it can be quite calming
- Take a nap in the afternoon, go on you probably earned it!
- Listen to some calming music
Looking at this list can you think of anyone who would benefit from you sharing these techniques? Have you got any other ideas? How could you share them so that others feel supported? Next week we will look at the Body in our Stress survival guide.
PSHE: Time to research a job. What would you really like to do for a living? How do you get to be the person who has that job? Plot the journey, email people who do this job and ask them if they think your plan would work. Do keep in mind they might be too busy to reply just yet.
Finally, here is this week’s exercise for improving our society. These are extra tasks, you do not have to do them but they are likely to be fun, help people, and make our society better [whether that is our society at home, locally or further afield]
Society 1:
Make a point of only saying positive things to everyone for at least an hour. Notice how this makes you feel, and whether it has an impact on them. Then tell them what you did and get them to have a go.
Week One (w/c 23/03/2020)
Discussion task: ‘The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our ‘behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel’ is this true? How could we help someone keep things in perspective?
Activity and Reading: Do 3 things that make you feel like yourself. Then write down why and share it with someone else. Does it surprise them?
Pick up a book, magazine, online article and start reading – what do you like about it? Try to summarise your thoughts and then share them with someone else
Planning: Make a plan to meet up with someone when things return to normal. Add lots of detail about where you will go and what you will do. Don’t tell them your plan yet. If your friend is feeling low in the next few days you can share it with them then to cheer them up.
Stress survival guide Pt 1, the Mind:
- Talk about what stresses you
- Keep a brief stress journal
- Prioritise your time
- Break big tasks into small steps
- Get into some good habits
- Ask for help when you need it
Looking at this list can you think of anyone who would benefit from you sharing these techniques? Have you got any other ideas? How could you share them so that others feel supported? Next week we will look at the Body in our Stress survival guide.
PSHE: Everyone needs a hobby. They help us to feel happy, develop great qualities, and often meet other people. If you had £1500 but had to spend it today on a hobby what would you do? How would it help you feel happy? How would it develop who you are and your qualities?
Finally, here is this week’s exercise for improving our society, and because it is the first week here are two! These are extra tasks, you do not have to do them but they are likely to be fun, help people, and make our society better [whether that is our society at home, locally or further afied]
Society 1:
Help anyone at home to get your home [nest] nice and ready for being there for a few weeks. Do some tidying and cleaning. Take the time to really look at all the great stuff you have.
Society 2:
Make a list of any businesses you use on a regular basis who you think might struggle in the coming weeks, and who you can no longer visit. Now write an email to them saying how appreciated they are, and perhaps asking if you can do anything to help from home.
