This was news to me and indeed all secondary schools across the country who had in fact been planning for an earlier return as instructed in a previous briefing in early May.

Guidance for Parents and Carers

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope you and your families are all safe and well.

VE Day: Whilst lockdown and ‘staying at home’ may have limited the recent VE Day celebrations, our community certainly rose to the occasion in doing what they could in a safe manner to commemorate and remember. Well done to Mr Daughtry and Mr Keeling who turned QEGS red, white and blue – another illuminating achievement from these two great staff!

Dear Parent/Carer

Updated Home Learning Guidance for Parents/ Carers

Firstly, can I take this opportunity to congratulate students, parents and staff and their efforts so far in managing the
first few weeks of our school closure. We have all started to adjust to new ways of working very well, and will continue
to find our way. I’m sure there have been many difficult times and times of real success but we will continue to support
students in helping them navigate their learning during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Dear Yr13 Parents/Carers,

As you may have already seen in the Press, the Government has issued further information on how A-level grades will be awarded this summer. Please note this doesn’t cover Vocational courses – we are awaiting further info on those.

I’ve attached the guidance document and the ‘letter to students’ produced by Ofqual, I have shared this with our student too.

Teachers will now finalise the ‘predicted’ grades in line with these guide lines. Please note this is NOT necessarily the same as any other ‘predictions’ shared (either for UCAS or on January reports)

They need to be based on a range of evidence produced before school closed 20th March, so that no one is disadvantaged.

As the guidance also makes clear, we can’t share these grades with anyone outside of the Centre, including Students and Parents.

We await more info about the resit opportunity in the Autumn term. I’m sure the Universities will also be sharing more information.

I hear many of our students are enjoying this early holiday/release from the pressure of Year 13! Which is good. Many are also engaging with the work teachers are setting to broaden their courses and help prepare for next steps after this year.

As a pastoral team we have been keeping in touch with Year 13 students via email offering advice, support and resources to help them both academically and with their overall well-being.

We are keen to arrange a celebration to mark the end of your son/daughter’s time at QEGS as soon as circumstances allow.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if we be of any help.

Take care.

Mrs Smith and Mrs Allen

Dear Yr11 Students and Parents,

You may have already seen in the press that the DfE have finally issued a little more information on the awarding of GCSEs for this summer. Please note this does not yet cover Vocational courses – we are awaiting further information on those.

I’ve attached the guidance document from Ofqual and the ‘letter’ they have written to you.

Teachers will now finalise students’ ‘predicted’ grades in line with these guidelines. Please note this is NOT necessarily the same as other ‘predictions’ as staff will have to be guided by the criteria set out in these new guidelines. Grades have to be based on a range of evidence produced before school closed on 20th March, so that no one is disadvantaged.

As the guidance also makes clear, we cannot share these grades with students or parents.

Right now Yr11 students are in the same boat as they would have been after their last exam. It is out of their hands; what will be will be; and, whatever the outcome, it is never the end of the world. We await more info about the resit opportunity in the Autumn term.

I hear many of our students are enjoying this early holiday/release from the pressure of Year 11! Which is good to hear. Don’t forget the Yr11 study work we have posted on our website which is relevant to any pathway students’ may choose to follow – www.qegs.link/y11and13resources

Remember we are still here for students over the coming weeks and months. Please do keep in touch. It is important that we know how you are and how we can support you.

Take care

Mr Garrity
Headteacher

Coronavirus Bulletin 20.3.20

Coronavirus Bulletin 20.3.20 Update 2

Thursday 19/03/2020 13:07pm
All schools close on Friday 20th March to the majority of students and this potentially means it may be sometime before we see some of our students again, particularly those in Years 11 and 13. As Year 11 and 13 examinations and assessments have been cancelled, we have now taken the decision that these year groups remain at home on Friday 20th March. The following year groups are to attend school as normal on Friday 20th March; Years 7, 9, 10 and 12 with Years 8, 11 and 13 to remain at home. It is important that students in Years 10 and 12 who are fit and able to come to school do attend, as these students will potentially miss a significant portion of their academic year and will still have examinations in 2021. We want to ensure we maximise the teaching and learning they have available.

Partial Closure Changes – Whilst we have been able to manage to remain open to the majority of students so far, due to increased staff absence, we will have to adapt our partial closure arrangements for the next few days. Thursday 19th and Friday 20th March, Years 8, 10 and 12 will be required to study at home. Students should access their learning online as outlined below. School will remain open as normal for Years 7, 9, 11 and 13.

We would like Yr9 to remain at home on Wednesday 18th March.

To help parents plan ahead, at this stage we will be looking for Yr9 to return to school on Thursday 19th March and for Yr10 to study at home on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th March. Yr10 study work is currently being set by staff and will be ready for these two days. Yr9 and 10 students, should in theory, be able to follow their normal timetable on the days they are studying at home and this routine will ensure good breadth of learning.

This evening, following the government announcement and significantly reduced staffing in our teaching teams, we have had to take the difficult decision to reduce our provision for Tuesday 17th March.

Yr9 will not be in school on Tuesday 17th March. We will assess our staffing capacity on a daily basis and update parents daily in advance of any further adaptations.

Work will be set for all students in yr9 via the Go4Schools homework tool or via their school email. Information will be on our website about how to access this work.

We appreciate the inconvenience this causes to students and parents and hope that you can understand our rationale. This is to ensure our educational provision for at least the majority of our school, including other year groups either much younger or in the midst of their exam courses.

Please check emails and our website for any further updates.
