Pen Portrait - Mr S Garrity

I arrived at QEGS in January 2002 as Head of Geography. The department was young and vibrant and we were able to quickly establish a culture of success and enjoyment. Numbers of geography students grew rapidly at both GCSE and A Level and the geography expeditions ventured further afield. The culture and ethos of QEGS got hold of me and a number of opportunities and promotions followed in a short space of time: In 2008 I was appointed Assistant Headteacher; 2010 promoted to Deputy Headteacher achieving my headteacher qualification along the way (NPQH); 2012 Associate Headteacher and in 2017 Headteacher. Each role has enabled me to work with highly talented and committed staff and have a significant impact on the education and wellbeing of students at QEGS. I feel proud and privileged to be in the position I am.

Prior to QEGS I spent 5 years teaching Geography and leading a SEN team in Cheshire. At Tarporley my passion for extra-curricular activities came to the fore: leading school football and basketball teams; leading foreign sports tours; leading outward bound activities and school ski trips; leading a Cheshire schools expedition to glacial Norway and training as a Mountain Leader. My teaching career actually began where I grew up, in Liverpool where I started out as a teacher of Geography and PE. Both of my former schools had and still have, high standards and high expectations and I was fortunate to work with highly motivated and dynamic colleagues.

My career could have been dramatically different if I had pursued my initial path. Upon leaving school in Liverpool, I was initially drawn to the world of work and the desire to earn a wage! However, my career in the world of finance was short lived when I realised that my passion for Geography and education was not going to be satisfied working in a sixth floor office. I returned to college and to A level studies, continuing to Lancaster graduating with BA (Hons) in Geography and then a PGCE in Teaching Secondary Geography. Balancing studies at college or university whilst holding down part-time employment was always a challenge and yet something I would not change for the world. This helped develop my work ethic and my interpersonal skills.

Travelling has also been a key part of both my studies and my career. I spent 6 months of my degree studying in Los Angeles California, summers working in Greece and holidays have included Australia, New Zealand, China, most of Europe and frustratingly nothing yet in South America!

I am now a husband and the proud father of 2 daughters. I still enjoy the same interests that I had in my youth including seeing my home team win now and again.
