Pen Portrait - Mr M Atkins

I joined QEGS in 2005 having completed my PGCE in Geography with Field Studies at Keele University. Joining a successful Geography department within a successful school was an exciting experience and I relished the opportunity to get young people excited about Geography. During my career at QEGS I have led and escorted a number of fieldwork visits including Trekking in Morocco, exploring Iceland, learning about biodiversity at the Eden Project, understanding more about historic glacial landscapes in Snowdonia, and I have even been known to take a visit to the WW1 battlefields of Northern Europe.

I am currently the Associate Leader of Post 16, having previously been Key Stage 5 Leader. I am exceptionally lucky to be able to help young people with their next steps after school, be they in A-Levels or BTec, and to help them as they plan what to do when they leave full time education. We have a team of very enthusiastic tutors and I am justifiably proud of the students in our Sixth Form.

I grew up in a very rural part of Staffordshire, spending most of my time outside in the fields. My rural background gave me my passion for Geography and a strong interest in agriculture; I spent 6 months living on a dairy farm in the USA. I studied Geography at Salford University where my research interest included (and still include) Geopolitics, Colonialism and Imperialism, Cultural Landscapes of North America, Glaciology, African Tropical Disease, African Transportation and Transformation, as well as Mapping Science.

My wife and I met at Keele University and we have 2 children, Éowyn and Rowan. She is currently studying for a PhD in the impact of urban hedgerows on biodiversity in urban areas. We enjoy travel and hope to give our family the experiences we have had and allow them to see the world (maybe even some icecaps or a glacier before they are all gone).
