Aug 2018 - QEGS students triumph in new GCSE exams!

Following on from last week's superb Post-16 results, staff and students are celebrating another week of success at the school. We are once again celebrating our wonderful Year 11 student achievements.

In 2017, English and maths courses converted to numbered GCSE grades with new tougher examinations. This year, almost all other subjects followed suit with students experiencing more ‘end of course’ exams, less coursework and much more challenging questions. QEGS staff and students have responded in typically excellent fashion resulting in many individual and collective successes.

Over 30% of all QEGS students were able to achieve at least one of the new ‘top grades’, now a grade 8 or 9, which are equal or higher to the previous A* grade. A phenomenal achievement in the first year of these new exams. The overall pass rate for all students and subjects at QEGS was 99%, again reflecting great success across the full ability range.

Our results continue to reflect our commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum with subjects such as Childcare, Food Preparation and Nutrition, Drama, Music and Engineering all achieving the top positions at school for overall student achievement. We also received our first set of BTEC Travel and Tourism results, a great success. The arts, the technologies and the vocational pathways continue to go from strength to strength here at QEGS as we ensure students can study relevant and purposeful courses.

It was another strong year for the core subjects. In maths, 73% of students secured a grade 4 or higher with 51% attaining a grade 5 or higher. Over 10% of QEGS maths students achieved one of the new top grades which only 5% nationally were expected to achieve. In English, 78% of students attained a Grade 4 or above and 68% succeeded in achieving a Grade 5 or more. Almost 15% of our English grades were the new top grades, again significantly higher than expected.

    Other notable successes include:

    • 100% pass rate in vocational courses including BTEC Engineering, Childcare, Travel and Tourism and Agriculture. Childcare results were once again exceptional.
    • Subjects such as Dance, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science, Art and Design, French and Religious Studies have all succeeded in making great progress in their exam results.
    • Some amazing individual student performances. Students who made the most progress compared to national average expectations included Callum Cartlidge, Charlotte Dean, Rebecca Ripley, Michael Power and Owen Pugh. Well done to them all.
    • Students who deserve an accolade for the highest number of top grades at GCSE include Emily Naden with an unbelievable elevenGCSEs at grade 9 or A*, Owen Pugh achieved nine at grade 9, Adam Blake and William Yates collect ten grades at 8 or 9 and Anisha Restrick and Molly Wallwork take home nine grades at 8 or 9. Special mention to Ben Horwood and William Yates who achieved commendations in their GCSE Further Maths exam (amongst the highest scores in the country!).

We expect the majority of our students to return to QEGS Sixth Form and for others we are supporting their pursuit of their preferred pathway either at college or via an apprenticeship. Mr Atkins (Head of Sixth Form) and his team will be in school on Thursday and available by email for help and advice.

The school feels busy and full of energy and we look forward to welcoming new and existing students and staff back to school. For prospective students of all ages (and parents), we will be holding this year’s Open Evening on Tuesday 25th September between 5pm and 7pm. Everyone is welcome, please come and find out about the vibrant life and culture of QEGS.

Well done to all our students on being rewarded for your hard work, many thanks to all staff and parents for your continued support, we could not do it without you.
