Sep 2017 - Sir Steve Redgrave Visits QEGS

On Friday 15th September, we were immensely privileged to spend the afternoon with Sir Steve Redgrave, one of Britain’s greatest ever Olympians, who won gold medals for rowing at five consecutive Olympics, and nine gold medals at World Rowing Championships.

Sir Steve was in Ashbourne to attend local company Whitehouse Construction’s 40th Anniversary Dinner, but first he met QEGS students for the afternoon. A group of around 40 BTEC Level 3 Sports Science and A level PE students and rowers heard about how he got into rowing through his English teacher at school, and about the intense training on and off the water to become an Olympic legend.

Later in the afternoon, Sir Steve presented the Junior Sports Colours: Colours are awarded for continual commitment, attitude and endeavour within a certain sport or sports, and the Junior Colours were presented to over 70 students in Year 10. Sir Steve spoke to a packed hall of Year 9 and 10 students, QEGS staff and some special guests from primary schools, in a celebration of one of QEGS most successful sports years ever, where we were county champions in netball, rounders, athletics, futsal table tennis, indoor cricket, rugby and swimming, and our U13 and U15 boys and girls were champions in District Outdoor Athletics.

Martin Farr has been at QEGS since 1981 and sport at QEGS has flourished under his leadership, so it was fitting that the day ended with Sir Steve Redgrave presented Mr Farr with a long-term service award from the school. Speaking after the event Mr Farr said that “I normally know just about everything going on at QEGS but I didn’t have a clue. I was blown anyway by Steve Redgrave's words to me personally as he gave me the present and even more blown away by the spontaneous standing ovation by the pupils. A very special moment in my career so far. A very special moment in my life.I'm still on a 'high' now!”

We are very grateful to Brell Ewart and Jo Ewart-Sear of Whitehouse Construction for this opportunity, and to Sir Steve Redgrave for a fantastic, inspirational afternoon.
