Aug 2017 - 'Best ever GCSE English and Maths results for QEGS

Following on from last week's superb Post-16 results, staff and students are celebrating another week of success at the school. This year, we are again celebrating our wonderful Yr11 student achievements.

As has been widely publicised, students sat the new reformed GCSEs in English and maths this year. The new examination system has been deliberately designed to be tougher with a new grading system of numbers instead of letters. This year, students of English and maths have achieved some fantastic results in the midst of a volatile educational climate.

    • Despite professional bodies predicting that 65%-70% of students in England will achieve a grade 4 (standard pass) or above in English and similarly in maths, 90% of QEGS students achieved a grade 4 or above in English and 79% achieved a grade 4 or above in maths.
    • Professional bodies also expected students achieving a grade 5 (strong pass) or above to fall to 35% nationally. In English 74% of QEGS students achieved a grade 5 or above and 57% achieved a grade 5 or above in maths.
    • At the time of writing, 77% of QEGS students have achieved a grade 4 or higher in both English and Maths GCSEs and 55% have achieved a grade 5 or higher in both subjects.
    • There were also some notable achievements from four students who achieved grade 9 (top 2% in the country) in both of their English qualifications Language and Literature. In total there were fifteen grade 9s across English Language and Literature and four grade 9s in maths (top 3% in the country) - exceptional performance from these students and subjects.

    Other notable successes include:

    • 100% pass rate in vocational courses including BTEC Engineering, Childcare, Construction and Agriculture. Childcare results were exceptional as all students achieved grades B or higher with 60% of the group achieving A*/A.
    • Other subjects with outstanding results include Spanish, Music, Geography, Art, ICT, Computer Science and History.
    • Some amazing individual student performances. Students who made the most progress compared to national average expectations included Sienna Allen, Harry Clarke, Abigail Spencer, Max Guest, Lauren Sowter and Alex Guest.
    • Students who deserve the accolades for the highest number of highest number of top grades at GCSE include Helena Shapton amassing twelve A*/A or 7/8/9 grades. Millie Beaumont, Max Guest, Abigail Spencer and Ben Stevens all achieved eleven A*/A or 7/8/9 grades. Georgina Chamberlain, Charlotte Cross, Leila Lockley and Lara Stoney achieved ten A*/A or 7/8/9 grades.

We expect the majority of our students to return to QEGS sixth form, for others we are supporting their pursuit of their preferred pathway at college and/or via an apprenticeship.

The school feels busy and full of energy and we look forward to welcoming new and existing students and staff back to school. For prospective students and parents, we will be holding this years Open Evening on Tuesday 26th September between 5pm and 7pm, all are welcome, please come and find out all about the vibrant life and culture of QEGS.

Well done to all our students on being rewarded for your hard work, many thanks to all staff and parents for your continued support, we could not do it without you.
