    What leadership means to us

    Lucy

    What is leadership to you?

    In my opinion, a leader is someone who takes charge of a group and helps everyone to complete a task. I donít think leadership is one person telling other what to do. I see it as teamwork and a group effort. The leader guides their team without dictating them, and in return the team works together.

    What are the values and principles of a good leader?

    A good leader needs to be knowledgeable and understand what needs to be done. I think they need to be able to think on their feet and keep a cool head in stressful situations. A good leader is able to listen to and work with others well, and have respect for the people they are with. They take in other peopleís ideas and incorporate them with their own leaderís characteristics, which should include being patient, calm, clear, empathic, smart.

    Can anyone therefore be a leader?

    In my opinion, very few people could be a good leader. This is because powerful people donít listen to others and find it hard to include otherís thoughts. Moreover, some people canít choose between difficult options and end up making the wrong choice. Also being a good leader could be hard and you would have to deal with a lot of pressure.

    Real world examples of a good leader, and why are they?

    I think Emmeline Pankhurst is a good real world example of good leadership: this is because she dedicated her life to promoting womenís rights. She experimented with a wide range of ideas to get people to listen to her and showed incredible determination. She was fair and loyal to her team, and together they won women the right to vote. I think she is a good leader because she had good ideas, listened to her team and was brave.

    What are your thoughts on effective student leadership in school?

    I think the house leader and prefects are the schoolís student voice because they pass on our views to others and try to change the things we think can be improved. Prefects and house leaders make student voice run well because the house leaders and prefects have to work well with others and have good ideas to do their job efficiently.

    What is leadership to you?

    Leadership to me is the ability to take control of a group of people and direct them to perform certain actions under my influence. Leadership is the ability to inspire or indicate others towards the leaderís goal. It also includes being able to lead a wide range of people, including children, teenagers and adults.

    What are the values and principles of a good leader?

    To me, important values are:

    • Integrity;
    • Authenticity;
    • Courage;
    • Service;
    • Humility;
    • Wisdom
    For a leader to stand out or be different I think it depends on their personality and tolerance to teach adequately. I believe that a good leader and a different leader must know how to inspire people, to motivate them to perform tasks instead of making them do them.

    Can anyone therefore be a leader?

    Not necessarily, those who suffer from confidence issues for example may struggle to portray themselves as a strong leader and therefore Ė especially if leading youngsters Ė itís unlikely they would receive much attention or respect. As there are so many people who are already good leaders itís hard to stand out, certain qualities and traits which I have mentioned are necessary Ė as well as a desirable personality.

    Real world examples of a good leader, and why are they?

    Emma Watson has been very inspirational speaking on the rights of females, promoting equality and being regarded with respect from men. She said, ďI am reaching out to you because I need your help. We want to end gender inequality Ė and to do that we need everyone to be involved.Ē Emma does not believe that there is gender equality and is fighting for women to receive the same pay as men, which is still a problem in many occupations. To me she is a good leader as she is confident, inspirational and courageous.

    What are your thoughts on effective student leadership in school?

    Effective student leadership in school to me consists of the leaders listening to fellow students and acting in a way that is helpful and informative. Leaders that care are generally leaders who gain the most respect, people willing to listen to others. Leaders need to be dominant in enforcing rules and guidelines which need to be followed if they are to be taken seriously, but also understand that in certain situations rules cannot always be followed Ė so leaders must have a relativist approach.

    Alice

    What is leadership to you?

    To me, leadership is the guiding of others in order to reach a desired outcome that is hopefully positive for all. Trust is placed in the leader, and with this they have the power to make decisions that will benefit the cause. It is about creating a clear vision that will reach a progressive outcome, and is demonstrated by someone who has the traits of determination, organisation and compassion.

    What are the values and principles of a good leader?

    The values and principles of a good leader include communication skills, creativity, commitment, compassion, determination, honesty, inspiration, organisation and vision. A good leader must show these characteristics in order to lead to an outcome that will benefit others and will lead to a more inclusive and successful society. A leader takes control even when the path is not clear, and therefore requires a level of confidence and vision that not everyone has. A leader must have peopleís best interests at heart, which makes leaders different and indeed unique.

    Can anyone therefore be a leader?

    Due to the required character traits, not everyone can be a leader. This is because to be a leader, a person must have the commitment, compassion and determination that causes others to put their trust in them. However, anyone with the traits listed has the potential to lead, and therefore leadership should not just be confined to the elite/ certain careers. Leadership can take many forms, whether that be in schools, communities or on a much more global scale.

    Real world examples, and why are they?

    In the real world, I believe people such as Emma Watson are good leaders, as she strives for gender equality and has undertaken roles with the UN to promote her cause. She has a clear vision for what she wants that is fuelled with compassion to change society for the better, and uses intelligent and sophisticated methods (through composed speeches etc) to generate support, hence making her a good leader. I also believe Nelson Mandela is an example of a good leader, which is proven through his legacy. He fought for what he believed in, despite the punishments as a result of this. He never gave up, inspiring many others to tackle real issues, thus making him a good leader.

    What are your thoughts on effective student leadership in school?

    I believe that effective student leadership in school is vital for inspiring thought and leading to a more inclusive and successful school. The student voice in school is important in ensuring that the ideas and feelings of the students are heard and listened to, and making sure that action is taken to make the school a place where students feel safe and able to succeed. A successful student voice should be made up of those committed to the cause and those who care about their school, as this will lead to the most compassionate outcome for all.
