Aug 2015 - YEAR 7 TRIP TO NORMANDY JULY 2015

As part of the end of school year enrichment week at QEGS, 83 students and 10 staff had a fantastic four-day visit to Normandy. Celebrating our 20th time to the Normandy coast, the trip still managed to inspire another generation of students. Their language skills were put to the test when buying snacks and drinks in a café, shopping in the market and asking for post cards and stamps, all whilst taking in the sights of the beautiful town of Bayeux.

The D-Day museum at Arromanches allowed students to witness, first hand, the remains of the Mulberry Harbour, which had played such a significant role in being able to supply fuel and ammunition to the Allied troops during the invasion in June 1944. We also visited the American cemetery at Omaha Beach, where so many troops lost their lives in World war II, which, as always, was very moving.

With the numerous activities, getting to sleep proved no problem at all. The students were constantly on the move, either running up and down the craters and bunkers that are still so evident at the Pointe du Hoc 71 years after the D-Day landings, or playing games on the beach, or going 10-pin bowling.

We all returned safe, sound and shattered. We had a really great experience, but with everyone agreeing that another more restful holiday was needed!
