    Aug 2015 - GCSE RESULTS 2015

Following on from last week's amazing year 13 results, which placed QEGS as the top school in Derbyshire and one of the top non-selective schools in the country, staff and students are celebrating another week of success at the school. This year, despite increased level of challenge in exams and national volatility in Yr11 results, QEGS students have once again achieved some great outcomes. 65% of students achieved 5 A*-C GCSE grades including English and Maths. This year, 77% of students made expected progress in English, 47% of students actually made more than expected progress in English, a phenomenal achievement. In Maths, 74% made expected progress and 33% of students made more than expected progress, again very impressive.

Our main area of success this year was with students who attract Pupil Premium funding: in 2013 30% of students made expected progress in English, rising to 41% in 2014 and this year it is 56%. In Maths: 2013 and 2014 60% made expected progress, and in 2015 70% of students in receipt of Pupil Premium funding made expected progress. Our best ever results for Pupil Premium students!

Students who receive support from the Extended Learning Department (formerly SEN) also achieved their best ever English results: in 2013 0% of SEN students made expected progress in English, in 2014 30% and in 2015 58%. In Maths, 2013 29%, in 2014 57% and in 2015 52% of students receiving support made expected progress, both are huge achievements for the students and the staff who support them in their learning.

In addition to the great set of GCSE results, there was also significant success in the vocational courses with 100% pass rate in Construction, BTEC Science, BTEC Engineering, Childcare and Agriculture and we expect all of these students to pursue their vocations at college and via apprenticeships. Subjects where students made the highest levels of progress were Expressive Arts, BTEC Science, Systems, BTEC Engineering, Catering, Resistant Materials, Art and Design, Geography, History and GCSE IT. 30 students in addition to their Maths GCSE, also achieved a Level 2 Further Maths qualification in preparation for study at A Level.

Overall, 36% of students at QEGS achieved 3 or more A* and A grades (3% higher than 2014), an outstanding result and in line this year’s national trend for 'top grades'. There were some amazing individual student performances. Students who made the most progress compared to national standards included Bradley James, Emily Kinderman, Grace Tower, Hannah Taylor, Jessica Liddle, Nathan Corbyn, Jack Dames, Elizabeth Aiton, Joshua McFall, Willow Kerr, Rebecca Clewes, Max Garnett and Edward Higgins. There are a number of students who deserve the accolades for the highest number of top GCSE grades achieved. Hannah Taylor amassed 11 x A* grades, an A* in all of the subjects she studied. Jessica Liddle and Callum Goode each attained 10 x A* grades and 1 x A grade, followed by Nathan Corbyn, Jack Dames and Joshua McFall with 9 x A* grades and 2 x A grades. Another 8 students achieved 11 x A*/A grades: Elisabeth Aiton, Edward Higgins, Maxwell Garnett, William Macdonald-Lowe, Thomas Coackley, Phoebe Graham, Grace Tower and Christopher Martlew.

The school feels busy and full of energy and we look forward to welcoming new and existing students and staff back to school. For prospective students and parents, we will be holding this year’s Open Evening on Tuesday 29th September between 5pm and 7pm, all are welcome, please come and find out all about the vibrant life and culture of QEGS.

Well done to all our students on being rewarded for your hard work, many thanks to all staff and parents for your continued support, we could not do it without you.
