Aug 2015 - Headteacher chosen for key school support role

The headteacher and staff at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Ashbourne Academy have been selected for a top role supporting schools in challenging circumstances.

Anne Martin is one of 70 headteachers to be appointed to the role of National Leader of Education (NLE) in the latest recruitment round.

NLEs along with staff in their school - designated a National Support School - use their success and professionalism to provide additional leadership capability in other schools.

NLEs are deployed to suit the needs of each school needing support, or to those in transition to federation or academy status. The type of support provided is flexible and can often involve NLEs becoming executive headteacher. They also have responsibility for bringing on the next generation of NLEs and National Support Schools.

Anne Martin said: “It is an honour and privilege to receive this national designation; it means that as a profession we can continue to learn from eachother and offer support to raise the standards of education for all young people in our local region. I have supported other local schools this year and have found the experience so incredibly rewarding. The quality of leadership at QEGS has been enriched; local staff have been provided with the opportunities to develop in their schools and we have been able to attract the very best staff to teach our young people. Ashbourne and this region is a great place to work. The National Support School designation for QEGS remains in place for my tenure; many staff have and will continue to benefit from this status as they develop their leadership skills and professionalism in the future. The benefits of NLE and NSS will be seen as standards in the area improve for all. Young people have just one chance in education – we have to do everything we can to make sure that it the very best it can be. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead; however, my focus remains on providing the very best for the students at QEGS; but having this role enables me, along with other leaders here, to support others to improve standards for many more young people.”

Many NLEs/NSSs report improved exam results at the schools they support, as well as their own.

Charlie Taylor, Chief Executive of the National College for Teaching and Leadership, said: “It’s great that heads like Anne Martin are willing to look beyond their own school gates to help more and more pupils achieve. We now have well over 1,000 National Leaders of Education and their efforts are at the heart of a self-improving, school-led education system.

“School-to-school support is having a growing impact with benefits for both the schools being supported and those providing the support.”

Successful heads will be invited to attend a formal induction and training event in October for the role in driving school improvement.
