Mar 2015 - Lights, Camera, Parliament!

A group of Year 8 students at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School have this week published their entry to the ‘Lights, Camera, Parliament!’ competition. Run by the Parliament Education Service, this annual event allows young people to tell members of parliament what law they would make by answering the question “If you could make one law, what would it be?” Their entry can be viewed online (click here) where, at the time of writing, it has been viewed over 500 times.

Lights, Camera Parliament! is a free filmmaking competition young people aged 7-18 that asks entrants to creatively communicate the issues that are important to them whilst engaging in the process of law-making and campaigning.

The competition asks participants to submit a 3 minute film telling Parliament what new law they would introduce in the UK. The Lights, Camera, Parliament! competition website (click here), offers lots of resources, tips, templates, inspiration topics and blogs for educators and young people to help make entering easy. Entries will be judged on creativity and a clear articulation of ideas, so no previous experience in film-making is required.

Now in its sixth year, there is also a library of previous entries to help inspire young people to get involved. (click here)

Previous entrants have proposed a wide range of legislation including a law proposing British manufacturers should share information about any involvement of child labour in their products, increased fines for litterers and harsher punishment for cyber-bullying. Competition entries can be submitted from 12 January 2015 until 27 March 2015.

Winners will be chosen in three categories – 7-11, 12-16 and 17-18. They will be invited to an awards day including a tour of the Palace of Westminster, an opportunity to speak to Members of Parliament about their law, and a showcasing event at the British Film Institute.
