One of the events planned this year to commemorate the opening of the Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School on The Green Road, Ashbourne in 1909, is an afternoon of Nostalgia on June 28th beginning at 1.30pm.
In the Main School Hall throughout the afternoon, Charles Hanson and his team of Valuers will be conducting individual valuations, in the following categories:- Silver and Jewellery, Ceramics and Glass, Paintings, Works of Art and Collectables-Carry on items only. Members of the public are invited to bring along any items which they can have valued for £1 per item.
Outside there will be Vintage Cars on display by kind permission of ACE. The Osmaston Band will play in front of the School during the afternoon and there will be stalls displaying games which have been popular over the past 100 years.
Notty Hornblower will present a display of costumes and school uniforms which span the last century. Hopefully, if the weather is fine, these costumes will be displayed on the steps outside the main entrance to the school which should make a magnificent backdrop.
Refreshments, cream teas etc will be available throughout the afternoon, and also in the hall there will be a grand tombola.
The event has been organised by the School, Old Ashburnian Society and the PTA. Admission is £2 per adult (under 10’s free) with free parking at the school.
The above photograph was taken in front of the Old School in Church Street where pupils left for The Green Road in 1909. It shows a boys colours blazer worn by former pupil Bob Bryan. This type of blazer was awarded for gaining colours in the various sports and was worn in the pre war days. The girls gym slip and boater is worn by Ellie-May Astbury showing her ready for the New School, which admitted girls for the first time in 1909. These uniforms and others will be on display during the afternoon on the 28th together with many cars dating back over the century. The one shown here is a TriumphGT6 dating back to the early 1970's.
As part of the celebrations, a number of items of centenary memorabilia have gone on sale. These include Limited edition prints and specially commissioned mugs and plates.
